Outboard Ignition Troubleshooting Page 2 Chrysler Systems

This section covers Chrysler outboard ignition troubleshooting for point-type ignition systems and Magnapower II systems. These procedures help diagnose no spark, weak spark, and repeated CD module failures.

Chrysler Point Type Ignitions with Amplifiers (Power Packs)

A large proportion of problems with battery CD units are caused by low battery voltage or poor ground connections. Low voltage symptoms include weak or erratic firing.

WARNING: Reversing battery cables will cause severe damage to the CD module and rectifier.

Chrysler CD modules are similar to OMC units except for wire colors:

  • Red +12V from battery
  • Blue +12V from key switch
  • Gray Coil output
  • White Tach signal
  • White/Black Points or preamp
  • Black Ground
No Fire on Any Cylinder
  1. Clean all battery connections and grounds.
  2. Verify CD module ground.
  3. Use spark tester on coil output.
  4. Check for minimum 9.5V on blue wire while cranking.
  5. Check white/black wire signal from distributor.
  6. Check DVA voltage (~200V) on coil feed.

After repair, verify battery voltage at 3500 RPM (1216V range).

Magnapower II Systems
  1. Disconnect kill wires and retest.
  2. Verify no voltage present on kill circuit.
  3. Test spark with plugs in and out.
  4. Check DVA voltage (170270V range).
  5. Verify correct coil polarity wiring.
