Trolling Motor Wiring Guide (12/24 Volt, 24 Volt & 36 Volt Wiring Diagrams)

We receive many requests for trolling motor wiring diagrams, especially for 12/24 volt systems, straight 24 volt systems, and straight 36 volt systems. The correct layout depends on your trolling motor and how the boat was originally wired.

Besides making the proper battery connections, use no less than 4 to 6 gauge wire for most heavier trolling motor applications and always protect the system with a 50 amp breaker on each hot leg. If a short occurs and no breaker is installed, wiring can heat up dangerously fast.

Basic Wiring Notes
For most setups, the biggest mistakes are undersized wire, missing breaker protection, or incorrect battery series/parallel connections. Before changing anything, identify whether your trolling motor is designed for 12 volt, 24 volt, or 36 volt operation and confirm how many leads your boat currently uses.

A trolling motor circuit should always be kept clean, tight, and protected from corrosion. Loose terminals, weak batteries, or poor cable ends can create voltage drop and poor performance even when the diagram itself is correct.
Safety & Troubleshooting Tips
  • Use the correct battery voltage for the trolling motor
  • Use proper gauge wire for the amp draw and wire length
  • Install a breaker on each hot leg as recommended
  • Check all terminals for corrosion and tightness
  • Verify battery condition before assuming a wiring fault
  • Do not guess at jumper placement on 24v or 36v systems
